Funeral service for Margarito “Max” Pena Soliz, age 81, of Tipton, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 25, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Tipton, with Reverend Les Banks, pastor, and Reverend Juan Gonzales, pastor of Rio De Jordan Iglesia in Altus, officiating.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home in Frederick.

Mr. Soliz passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023, in Altus, Oklahoma.

Burial will be in the Tipton Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Orr Gray Gish & Tipton Funeral Homes.

He was born August 3, 1942, at Edinburg, Texas, to Luis L. Contreras and Julia Pena Solis Contreras. He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and attended Clarkwood School. As a youth, Max loved to play ball with neighborhood friends and was well known for his pitching ability. As he became older, he continued his love and skills for sports. Max played semi-pro baseball for several teams, including the Frederick Jets. Later, he played softball and played on a National Championship team. He played volleyball as well and enjoyed golf. To put it simply, he was a sports fanatic. He treasured the friendships he made in sports, including teammates and opposing players both. He was united in marriage to Guadalupe Garza in 1962, at Duke, Oklahoma. Max and Lupe made their home in Tipton. He worked for Centra Leather Goods in Frederick; Cooper Airmotive in Frederick; Schlegel Manufacturing in Frederick; and Howmet in Wichita Falls. He was an avid Tipton Tiger fan and supported all Tipton Tiger events. He was a huge Dallas Cowboys football fan and was always willing to argue with anyone that opposed them. He attended Templo Las Olivas Iglesia Pentecostes where his father-in-law pastored and more recently, First Baptist Church of Tipton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Tomas Solis and wife Carmen, Angelita Olga Garza and husband Pete Jr., Linda Hinojosa, Juan Contreras, Peter Contreras and wife Mary, and his mother and father-in-law: Rev. Pedro Garza Sr. and wife Josephina.

Survivors include his wife: Guadalupe “Lupe” Garza Soliz; three sons: Paul Soliz and wife Lynn, Israel Soliz and Cora Smith, and Jonathan Soliz and Jennifer Becerra; grandchildren: Nathan Soliz and wife Rachel, Lyndsey Soliz and Paul Alonzo, Whitney Soliz Huff and husband Austin, Christian Soliz and McKinzie Lovette; a brother: Luis Contreras and wife Dora; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His memory will be treasured.
