Funeral service for James Floyd Smith, affectionately known as Ray or Slim, age 88, of Frederick, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Friendship Baptist Church (South 4th Street and Aster), in Frederick, with Reverend Derrick Johnson, pastor, officiating.
The sun set for our dear brother on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
Burial will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home.
He was born April 20, 1933, to Warsaw L. and Florence (Collins) Smith, in Boswell, Oklahoma. He was their 10th child and 5th son. He was introduced to the love of Jesus by his parents. He came to Tillman, County, Frederick, in 1941. He attended Frederick schools. James was a helper and a jack of all trades. Everyone knew they could call on him for handy work and small odd jobs. He was good with his hands and was quite skilled at plumbing as well. He loved to make jelly and preserves. James was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, pastored by Rev. Derrick Johnson. He was the Superintendent of Sunday School and president of the Brotherhood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Jessie, David, W.D., and Henry Smith; and five sisters: Addie Mae Gordon, Mary Lee Norris, Magalene Miller, Myrtle Lee Applings and Franciel Lang.
He is survived by one brother: Wade Smith and his wife Lola, of Frederick; two sisters: Jearlene Williams, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Shirley Stevenson and husband Jimmie, of Lawton; a close friend: Ruby Anderson; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
