Funeral service for Hurston Bishop “H. B.” Akin, age 84, Frederick, Oklahoma, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church of Frederick, with Reverend Lisa Beavers, pastor, officiating.
Mr. Akin passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019, at an Edmond, Oklahoma, assisted living facility. A family and friends gathering will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial with United States Navy Honors will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home.
He was born September 29, 1934, in Frederick, Oklahoma, to Hurston B. and Nancy May (Hayter) Akin. He attended Frederick schools and graduated from Frederick High School in 1953, where he was active in F-Club and FFA. He attended Cameron Jr. College 1953-1954, and then Oklahoma A & M 1954-1956. He graduated from the School of Aviation Tech and received certification as FAA Aircraft Mechanic A & P. He joined Navy flight training as Naval Aviation Cadet in January 1957. He received his Navy Aviator Wings in July 1958 and commission as Ensign. He joined Patrol Squadron 48 in San Diego flying PS seaplanes. He was united in marriage to Lynda Lea Blakely on December 26, 1960, at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. He transferred to Pensacola, Florida, in July 1962 as Flight & Ground School Instructor. He was assigned to Patrol Squadron 50 back in San Diego in 1966. He was deployed to Sangley Pt. P1, participating in Operation Market Time in Vietnam. He was selected to attend Navy Post Graduate School undergraduate program at Monterey, California in 1968-1969 and received a bachelor’s of science degree in Engineering Science. He was assigned to staff of Fleet Air Wing 10 1969-1971, in San Jose, California, then assigned to staff of Commander Task Force in 1972 in Okinawa in 1972, then Staff moved to Kamasega, Japan in 1973. He transferred to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in 1975 and retired from the Navy May 31, 1977, after serving honorably and receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 3 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ Device, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal w/ a Gold Star. Upon his military retirement, he, Lynda, Chuck and Jason moved to Davidson, Oklahoma, and Hurston began farming. He received a teaching certificate from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He was elected president of the Davidson Chamber of Commerce and worked part time for the City of Davidson as Water Superintendent and was also hired as director of Emergency Management for Frederick and Tillman County in 1988, retiring in 1998. He served as president of the Frederick Rotary Club in 1996. He served as commander and vice-commander of the Tillman County Civil Air Patrol Squadron from 1988-1998. He held FAA Commercial Pilots Certification, Certified Flight Instructor Certificate and Civil Air Check Pilot. He and Lynda moved to Lake Texoma in 1999. He is a member of the Frederick First United Methodist Church, while at Lake Texoma he joined Woodville Lighthouse United Methodist Church and served as Trustee and choir director. He also served on Texoma Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife: Lynda Akin, in Edmond, Oklahoma; two sons: Charles “Chuck” Hurston Akin, Frederick, and Jason Blakely Akin and wife Amy, of Edmond; two sisters: Oretha L. Ferguson and Carol Dean Schreiner, both of Norman; and five grandchildren: Josh, Jennifer, Jeremy, Raven and Luke; and ten great grandchildren: Harley, Christian, Trevor, Laetyn, Blakely, Samantha, Kyler, Braden, Atticus and Kingston.
