Graveside service for Alta (Grissom) Russell, age 96, of Frederick, Oklahoma, was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery with David Ridenour, minister of Frederick Church of Christ (13th & Josephine), officiating. Mrs. Russell died Friday, October 31, 2008, at the Frederick Memorial Nursing Care Center. Burial was in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home, Frederick, Oklahoma. She was born July 6, 1912, in Frederick, Oklahoma, to Lucius Lavader and Hannah Cordelia (Hall) Grissom. Her family was a Tillman County pioneer family, coming to this area in a covered wagon and homesteading a farm east of Frederick. She attended Frederick schools and graduated high school in 1930. She was united in marriage to Joe Alvin Russell on March 6, 1932, in Frederick, Oklahoma. During WW II, she worked out at the Frederick Air Base in the airplane parts division. She was very proud of her country and was proud to serve and work at the base during that time. Later, she worked for many years for Dr. J.H. Holloman in his dental practice as not only clerical administrative assistant, but also as a dental assistant. Alta loved to help and serve others and care for friends in a number of ways. She was especially proud of her family heritage and the fact that the original homesteaded family farm had been in her family for almost 100 years until she sold it just a few years ago. She was a member of the Frederick Church of Christ. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her husband Joe Alvin Russell, on June 14, 1994; and two sisters: Ruth Morton and Myrtle Anderson. She is survived by two sons: Joe Lynn Russell, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Dr. David Russell and his wife Jane, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
