Lenora Waggoner Jackson

Mrs. Lenora ("Nonie") Waggoner Jackson, 93, died Tuesday March 9, 2010 at Well Spring in Greensboro, NC. A memorial service was held at 11:00 am on Friday March 12, 2010 at Well Spring in the Richardson Auditorium. Graveside service was held at Frederick Memorial Cemetery in Frederick, OK, at 11:00 am on Saturday March 20, 2010. Burial was under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home. Mrs. Jackson was born July 24, 1916 in Frederick, OK to the late Carl H. and Laura Kent Waggoner. She was a graduate of Frederick High School and graduated from Draughons Business College in Oklahoma City. After college she worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance in Los Angeles, CA where she met her future husband Milton J. "Jack" Jackson. The couple's first home was in Hollywood Hills behind the original "Hollywood" sign. Mrs. Jackson was a long-term member of the Charity Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in Greensboro and devoted countless hours to volunteer work at local hospitals. She loved crafts and needlepoint, and many of her creations were donated and sold through the hospitals' gift shops. She also was an active volunteer at the Greensboro Historical Museum gift shop. She and her late husband loved the Greensboro Symphony and she created the Milton J. Jackson Memorial Chair in support of the symphony's operations and was an active member of the symphony's guild. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed gardening and flowers, and was a long-time member of the Flower Lovers Garden Club. Mrs. Jackson was an avid traveler and visited many countries throughout the world. She particularly enjoyed her many trips throughout the Orient and her home was filled with hundreds of collectibles and unique items from this region. Mrs. Jackson was interested in children and was affectionately known as "Nonie" to many. She was a founding donor and major supporter of the Greensboro Children's Museum where "Nonie's House" is a replica of her former home on Magnolia Street in Fisher Park. She and her godchildren enjoyed many happy times there. "Nonie's House" welcomes children into a world before today's modern appliances and conveniences. Nonie will be especially remembered for her quick wit, constant smile, love of games, funny mannerisms and gentle nature. She was always a joy to be around. Mrs. Jackson is survived by godson and goddaughter, William Roger and Melanie Reid Soles, Jr., of Greensboro, their children William Roger Soles, III and Catherine Reid Soles, Janette Soles Nelson and husband Steven of Raleigh, NC, goddaughter Mary Sandra Poteat of Greensboro and her brother William and family of Wilmington, NC, and cousin Dorothy Gayle Wilkinson and husband Fred of Lawton, OK. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Memorials may be made to the Greensboro Children's Museum c/o Nonie's House, 220 N. Church Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
