Van Reed

Van Laverne Reed went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the age of 87 years, and 14 days. He was born on June 21, 1924 to George Guy and Ethel Zelma (Springer) Reed, on a farm near Davidson, Oklahoma. He attended school and graduated from Davidson High School in 1942. He volunteered for the United States Navy in February 1943. He was attached to the Second Marine Division serving in Antewetok, Guam, Iwo Jima, Johnson Islands, Okinawa, and Pearl Harbor, earning five Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for over 50 years. He and Tommye A. Coats were married in Vernon, Texas on October 8, 1946. He worked for Southwestern States Telephone Company beginning on March 21, 1947; then they sold to General Telephone Company and he worked there 33 ½ years. He and Tommye moved to Frederick in 1957. He joined the First Baptist Church in Davidson, Oklahoma in 1961 and taught the Junior Boys Sunday School Class for eight years. He supported and worked with Little League Baseball teams for 10 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman beginning at an early age on the Red River. He loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law: Jimmie Coats. He is survived by his wife: Tommye, of the home in Yukon; one son: Jerry Van Reed and wife Kathy, of Yukon; one grandson: Jered Van Reed and wife Casey, of Yukon; one great grandson: Brett Van Reed, of Yukon; one great granddaughter: Grace Reed, of Yukon; one sister: Ann Prestage, of Bella Vista, AR; one sister-in-law: Jackie Taylor and her husband Pete, of Weatherford, TX; and several cousins.
