Ada Mae Grant

February 5, 1917 — October 21, 2012

Ada Mae Grant went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 21, 2012. She passed away in Mangum, Oklahoma, at the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 16 days. She was born on February 5,1917, to Trammell Clayton and Sara Cornelia (Martindale) Pope, in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The family moved to Thalia, Texas, about 1929, where the family worked for farmers. Ada Mae was the third oldest of ten children. She went to work in the fields during her teenage years while taking care of other people and cooking with her sisters. She married George Elbert Grant in Loveland, Oklahoma, on August 4, 1937 at the First Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 20, 1985. She was employed at the Kellwood Company in Frederick as a first aide technician. She also worked at Nocona Boot Company making belts, and also for the Betsy Bra Factory as a seamstress. After her husband died, she worked in the home health field taking care of the elderly. While a resident at Merrill Gardens Assisted Living, Vernon, Texas, and Grace Living Center, Mangum, Ada entertained many with her musical ability playing the piano and harmonica by ear. In her younger days, she was also quite adept on the accordion. She was a lady with many artistic talents who loved beautiful things. She dearly loved crafts, dominoes and bingo and all the "dessert" carts offered by the workers. She was always grateful to the nurses, doctors, aides and volunteers who came to the facilities making her life more comfortable. Marian Bryant-Silk became one of her favorite visitors while at Grace Living Center. She never got enough of the watermelon treats and those chocolate candy bars brought by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: George; four brothers: Fred, Clayton, Autry and Kenneth; and four sisters: Pansy Barnes, Naomi Lewis, Frances Shores and Evelyn Pyles. She is survived by two sons: Carroll W. Grant and wife, Joy, and Arvel Grant, all of Mangum; four grandchildren: Stacey Grant Hoch and husband Rich, of Burleson, TX, Chandra Grant Brabson and husband Chris, of Lewisville, TX, and Dana Akins and husband Lyle, of Richmond, VA, and Christopher Grant, of Weatherford, TX; three great-grandchildren: Robert Smith, of Frederick, Madison and Burrae Grant, of Weatherford, TX, and Haley Akins, of Richmond, VA; one sister: Zelma Dowdy, of Comanche, OK, and numerous nieces and nephews.
