Ramon R Chavez

August 15, 1931 — January 11, 2017

Ramon Chavez pass from this life on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at the age of 85 years, four months and 27 days. He was born on August 15, 1931, to Arcadio Chavez and Amalia (Rendon), in Davis Switch, Texas. During 1930’s to 1940’s the Chavez family were migrant-farm workers. Ramon went to work in the fields at a young age. Six months out of the year the family (parents, 10 girls and two boys) wandered across the United States working as a unit on fruit, vegetable and cotton farms. In the 1950’s, his parents settled in Tipton, followed by Ramon several years later. He was united in marriage to Maria Herrera, on December 8, 1952, in Lubbock, Texas. They were young parents of four children when they decided to moved to Tipton, Oklahoma, in 1961, from San Antonio, Texas. Their family grew into nine children, seven boys, and two girls. Ramon’s success as a parent is linked to his simple but very real understanding that his family comes first, and the most important thing to him was raising his kids, he was very proud of his family. When he settled in Tipton, he worked at the Cotton Gin; over the years he saved enough to acquire three old trucks he used to haul hay for the surrounding farmers. Ramon was a devout, Catholic. A large cloth picture of Our Lady Guadalupe would hang in the window of the front door and at night, would shine bright and clear for passersby in the street. In the early 1970’s, when talk began about a Church in Tipton, Ramon Chavez donated the land for the building, Sacred Heart Catholic Church.         He was preceded in death by his parents: Arcadio and Amalia Chavez, his first wife: Maria Chavez, in 1990; two sons: Juan Manual and Arcadio Chavez; and one brother: Margarito Chavez.         He is survived by his wife: Josefina (Sanchez) Chavez, of Tipton, Oklahoma; children from his first wife Maria (Herrera) Chavez, two daughters: Esperanza Chavez, and Margarita Chavez, both of Tipton, Oklahoma; five sons: Adolfo Chavez, of Tipton, Oklahoma, Ramon Chavez Jr., of Tipton, Oklahoma, Gregorio Chavez, of Tipton, Oklahoma, Roberto Chavez, of Lubbock, Texas, and Pedro Chavez, of Lawton, Oklahoma; 10 sisters; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.Orr Gray Gish & Tipton Funeral Homes111 North 11th Street Frederick, OK 73542(580) 335-2112
